ICT course and system developer at NKI Distance Education

My name is Truls Fagerberg and I work at NKI Distance Education as a ICT course and system developer in the Department of Research and Development. I have also worked as an educational teacher supervisor in the Department of Education and as system developer and research assistant in the Department of Research and Development. NKI is one of the leading non-governmental educational institutions in Europe and offers over 200 study programmes and more than 450 courses at secondary and undergraduate level and specialized courses. ( http://www.nki.no/)

My educational background

I have a masters degree in “ICT and Pedagogical Development” from The Danish University of Education in Copenhagen and NKI Distance Education from 2005. My subjects were ICT and learning processes/scientific methods, Specialization Program in International Online Education, and master’s thesis in ICT and Pedagogical Development.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology and diploma in IT-management from The Polytechnical College in 2000. Some of the subjects I studied were Scientific methods, Strategy development and Web-based training. My diploma project assignment was “An Analysis of Courses on the web”.
The intention of this study was to find out what kind of technology elements and course services were used in web courses. This assignment was a part of the CISAER (Courses on the Internet: Survey, Analysis, Evaluation, Recommendation) project supported by the European Leonardo Da Vinci programme.

What I do at NKI

I'm responsible for the development and maintenance of NKI’s portfolio of ICT courses. I am also working with issues related to NKI’s Learning Management System (LMS), SESAM and I’m participating in national and international research projects. In my former job at NKI I was involved with the technical development of SESAM, which serves over 8000 active online students. My job covered database development and maintenance, programming, course development and design, and technical support to our students and teachers and in-house support on our LMS. I have also worked as an online teacher at NKI and as an educational teacher supervisor.

International projects

NKI has engaged in research and development in distance education since 1969. More recent publications in Norwegian and English are available at our web site, www.nettskolen.com. Most of our research projects have been wholly or partly financed with public funds from the Norwegian state and from EU.
